The Journalism & Writing course is designed for students ages 16–24 to build foundational writing, research, and media literacy skills. Through news reporting, feature writing, interviews, and editorial pieces, students learn to communicate effectively and ethically. The course emphasizes structure, clarity, and accuracy in writing, using the 5Ws and the inverted pyramid model. Students also explore digital media formats like blogging and podcasting. Career exploration in journalism and media fields is integrated through resume writing and guest speaker engagement. By the end of the course, students will have built a writing portfolio and presented their work.
Personal Finance & Career Readiness
Grade 11–12 | 5 Credits
The Personal Finance & Career Readiness course equips students ages 16–24 with essential life and employment skills aligned with NJ state standards. Topics include budgeting, saving, credit management, job searching, resume writing, and interview techniques. Students apply real-world problem solving through activities like creating budgets, mock interviews, and financial planning exercises. The course also explores career pathways and goal-setting strategies. Emphasis is placed on making informed decisions, understanding economic systems, and developing workplace readiness. Students complete the course with a financial plan and career action plan tailored to their goals.

The Applied Math course for 11th and 12th grade students is designed to connect mathematical concepts with real-world applications, preparing learners for both college and career pathways. Aligned with New Jersey State Standards, the course emphasizes problem-solving, data analysis, proportional reasoning, and algebraic thinking in practical contexts such as budgeting, construction, entrepreneurship, and measurement. Students engage in hands-on projects, explore career-based scenarios, and apply quantitative reasoning to make informed decisions. Key mathematical topics include geometry in the trades, financial literacy, statistics, and interpreting graphs and tables. Emphasis is placed on mathematical modeling, precision, and communication of solutions. This course helps students see the relevance of math in everyday life and future professions.

Science of Construction
Grade 11–12 | 5 Credits
​​The Science of Construction course introduces students to the scientific principles and engineering practices behind modern construction. Through hands-on projects, students explore materials science, structural engineering, environmental systems, and sustainable design. The course integrates physics, chemistry, and earth science concepts with real-world applications in architecture, civil engineering, and green building technology.
Wood Tech 101
Grade 11–12 | 2.5 Credits
Wood Tech 101 at SBAC introduces students ages 16–24 to the fundamentals of woodworking and carpentry. Students learn essential skills such as tool safety, measuring, cutting, and assembling basic wood projects. The course emphasizes hands-on learning, teamwork, and proper shop procedures. Participants gain confidence using both hand and power tools while completing individual and group projects. This foundational course prepares students for advanced training or entry-level work in the trades. It is also a stepping stone into our Youth Build program.
Wood Tech 102
Grade 11–12 | 2.5 Credits
Wood Tech 102 builds upon the skills learned in Wood Tech 101, offering advanced instruction in design, joinery, finishing, and project planning. Students explore more complex tools and techniques, including digital design integration through laser engraving. Projects focus on real-world application, such as fulfilling contracts for custom wood products. Safety, craftsmanship, and attention to detail are emphasized throughout. This course helps prepare students for employment opportunities and deeper vocational training in carpentry and construction.

Graphic Design/Laser Engraving
Adobe Certification HBI
Grade 11–12 | 5 Credits
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of graphic design and the applied use of laser engraving technology. Students will develop skills in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, learn the principles of design and typography, and apply these to real-world projects such as logos, signage, keychains, and engraved boards. By the end of the course, students will create a portfolio of digital and physical work while gaining essential career readiness and financial literacy skills.
Fine Arts
Grade 11–12 | 2.5 Credits
The Fine Arts courses at SBAC offer students ages 16–24 a dynamic introduction to creative expression through hands-on, project-based learning. Courses include Mosaic Art, where students learn design, color theory, and tile application to create detailed works. In Mural Painting, students collaborate on large-scale public art, exploring composition, community themes, and visual storytelling. The Plaster Mold Casting class teaches traditional and contemporary casting techniques used in both decorative and restorative arts. Each course emphasizes artistic process, craftsmanship, and individual creativity. Together, these classes build technical skill, cultural awareness, and confidence in artistic expression.
